Safety

In IAI member companies, over one million people are employed around the world in the extraction and processing of bauxite and the production of alumina and aluminium and related downstream industries such as packaging. IAI Member companies believe that the safety of employees – both on and off the job – is a key priority.

IAI members, through the activities of the IAI Safety Committee, have committed to increasing the safety of all their operations for the mutual benefit of employees, their families and the industry as a whole. Companies produce annual reports on plant safety performance by lost time incidence, total recordable incidence, and injury severity.

Benchmarking of these data allows anonymous comparison by a plant of its own performance when compared to other plants across the world. It also provides the sites with a way to track their own progress relative to others and to initiate further improvements. In support of this, the IAI recognises plants that are best performers through its annual IAI Safety Awards.

Key safety factors measured are:

  • Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate – The number of lost time incidents at a plant per million hours worked. A Lost Time Accident is categorised as any accident where the injured person is absent for one or more scheduled workdays beyond the day of the accident.
  • Total Recordable Incident Frequency Rate – The total number of recordable incidents at a plant per million hours worked. Recordable incidents are those that require more than first aid and include medical treatment cases, cases where the work output of an employee is restricted and lost time incidents.
  • Lost Time Injury Severity Rate - The number of days that the injured employee is unable to work per incident.
